Mary Street Bridge & Sidewalks Improvements
Cochran provided surveying, engineering design, bidding document preparation, construction inspection, and project management services for the replacement of the Mary Street low-water crossing in Jackson. The existing crossing was prone to flooding and periodic closures, limiting the reliability of an important local connection. The project replaced the low-water crossing with a new elevated bridge while improving pedestrian access, drainage, utilities, and roadway approaches.

The project included a new bridge structure with associated roadway embankments and approach asphalt pavement. ADA-compliant concrete sidewalks were constructed along the corridor to provide a continuous pedestrian connection and improve accessibility. Cochran also designed modular block walls and cast-in-place concrete retaining walls to accommodate grade transitions within the constrained project area.
Additional improvements included storm sewer, sanitary sewer, and water system upgrades, pavement striping, and traffic control. The project required coordination of multiple infrastructure improvements within limited right-of-way while maintaining pedestrian accessibility and managing utility conflicts. Cochran provided construction inspection and project management throughout construction, including coordination of the bridge, roadway, sidewalk, utility, and drainage improvements.
The project was constructed in coordination with improvements to U.S. Route 61 through Jackson, which included turn lanes at Mary Street, pavement improvements, utility upgrades, and replacement of the Hubble Creek bridge at Jackson City Park. Coordinating the local and state projects allowed the improvements to be integrated within the surrounding transportation and utility network.
The Mary Street Bridge and Sidewalk Improvements project was completed in May 2023, providing a more reliable crossing and improved pedestrian and infrastructure connections along the corridor.
