Iron County Road 53 Bridge Replacement
Cochran provided engineering design and construction inspection services for the replacement of Bridge No. 05300151 on Iron County Road 053 in Iron County. The project replaced the existing bridge with a new single-span structure and approximately 350 linear feet of asphalt roadway approaches. The improvements provided a new bridge crossing with updated structural, roadway, and safety features while addressing foundation and channel protection requirements at the site.

The new bridge is a 40-foot single-span structure with a 22-foot deck width supported by precast concrete deck beams. Cochran’s design and construction services included removal of the existing bridge, earthwork, pre-boring for pile installation, structural steel piling, concrete substructure construction, placement of precast concrete deck beams, SL-1 guardrail, asphalt pavement, and traffic control.
The foundation design incorporated pre-bored steel pile foundations with reinforced pile points to address challenging subsurface conditions and provide the required structural support for the replacement bridge. This approach allowed the foundation system to be constructed within the site constraints while supporting the new bridge substructure.
Cochran also incorporated heavy rock blanket and permanent geotextile protection to stabilize the channel and address potential scour and erosion around the new bridge substructure. These improvements protect the crossing and surrounding roadway approaches from channel movement and erosion while supporting the long-term performance of the bridge.
Cochran provided construction inspection throughout the project, including oversight of bridge removal, pile installation, concrete substructure construction, deck beam placement, roadway improvements, guardrail installation, and traffic control. The federally funded BRO-B047(16) project was completed in 2024.
