Denmark Road Treatment Plant

Denmark Road Treatment Plant

Cochran provided comprehensive engineering services for the expansion and modernization of the Denmark Road Wastewater Treatment Plant, helping the City of Union increase treatment capacity, improve operational efficiency, and prepare for future regulatory requirements. The project transformed an existing 300,000-gallon-per-day oxidation ditch facility into a modern wastewater treatment system capable of treating peak flows of 1.9 million gallons per day and an average daily flow of 800,000 gallons per day.

A key component of the project was the implementation of an advanced Schreiber Counter Current Aeration System (CCAS), a biological nutrient removal process designed to achieve high levels of treatment performance while maximizing operational flexibility. The innovative system combines biological treatment and final clarification within a compact footprint, optimizing site utilization while providing the capability to meet increasingly stringent nutrient removal standards.

The expansion also included the design of a new aerobic sludge digestion system, complete with high-efficiency aeration equipment and a new 600-amp, 480-volt motor control center to support plant operations. Cochran provided full mechanical, electrical, and process engineering services to ensure seamless integration of the new treatment technologies with the existing facility.

To further enhance safety and reduce operating costs, Cochran designed the conversion of the plant’s disinfection process from chlorine gas to ultraviolet (UV) disinfection technology. This upgrade eliminated the need for hazardous chemical storage while providing a reliable, environmentally responsible solution for effluent disinfection.

The Denmark Road Wastewater Treatment Plant expansion showcases Cochran’s expertise in advanced wastewater treatment design, helping communities invest in resilient infrastructure that protects public health, supports future growth, and safeguards local water resources.
